this is...a million dollar question that i really don't know what to think!!! but let's explore a few possible outcomes —

1. it goes bye bye, Meta buys it, it enshitifies, the end (most likely)

2. it goes bye bye, Trump "saves" it for a boost in cred, it still goes to Meta, enshitifies, etc.

3. it goes bye bye, Trump "saves" it, it stays with China and starts a four year "war on China" which introduces, like, "digital tariffs" or some shit

4. it goes away, it doesn't get bought/goes to not-Meta, languishes, dies, becomes Vine

5. somehow the lawsuit doesn't go through, everything remains the same, people forget this was even a big deal to begin with

so these are...all fine! not great — and i really wonder what a VPN-driven TikTok world will look like, as i think that will be a big "thing" too (which could eventually influence things or produce a similar situation to X in Brazil, a la huge fines for VPN use). i worry (obvs) about this silencing so many but i do believe there will be migration elsewhere, not just to Reels but also to Shorts and emerging platforms that have been waiting for this.

from the outside, it's going to have a HUGE impact on international culture as American tiktok is THE tiktok. what will it mean to have Hollywood 5.0 disappear? will that eat away at a key part of American pop cultural dominance? it might! anyway, perhaps we'll muse on this next week. what do you think??
