The Etsy article is so interesting, in a cultural moment where so many of us want to return to physical goods unique to a person's physical touch, the indie art seller should be poised more than ever to be an artist-first platform that celebrates human creation. Alas, they are just an example of what the physical media people are fighting against.

Oof first thing I thought finishing your B2B essay is that this might ultimately be retaliation culture, which ties into your recent surveillance culture thing, a panopticon vibe to making and keeping a living. I don't know if you read Naomi Klein's Doppelganger, but she has a great essay in there about how the autism panic is a potent litmus test for fascism that sounds like it's been around for a long time, but was big in Nazi Germany. Neurotypical children survived because they would conform to and not question the dominant party, while neurodivergent children were killed after being diagnosed, "quite literally, with a deficit of fascism." A lot of the criteria for being neurotypical is based on what makes a good worker, meds like Adderall and even antidepressants seem designed more than anything to create that outcome, and autistic people statistically have a much harder time getting and keeping jobs, so masking can be life or death. A lot of people living on the street are neurodivergent, and I remember especially in 2023 a lot of conversations about "opening the asylums" to justify harsher sweeps of homeless camps and couching it in the language of care and it being for their own good. The strategy clearly wasn't cut and dry because there are people sleeping on the street everywhere, and I think that's on purpose too, to illustrate how abject the stakes can get. I think most people see it and are at least subconsciously internalizing an impetus to be on their best behavior, which gets even more complicated when ultra-competent 99th percentile workers have been getting laid off for years. I don't get the point of that if there is one— maybe a setup for eventual company towns, maybe just purely terrible planning from people who have a say in this sort of thing— but I have a hard time thinking it isn't carceral šŸ˜• No one has to be in the tower for the panopticon to work
