I scanned that John Maus article when it came up in the Stereogum newsletter a while back and I think your initial impulse to be suspicious of his comeback is smart. The comments point out some BIG stuff that's on the record about him that didn't come up at all in that profile, and does make anything that isn't interested in going hardball with him on that feel... worth some healthy skepticism. He's a good looking, well-educated white man! Doesn't take too much for a guy like that to perform a convincing apology tour.

i missed the comments!!!! which...yes. i feel like i'm going crazy seeing him get featured in Perfectly Imperfect, etc. and no one is addressing that, which — to your point — the "smart white guy" who made a name as an edgelord that did the obvious edgelord thing by pivoting right doesn't have to do that much to perform apologies. i don't know what to do with it but it's definitely one of the more interesting culture studies of these times (to me, at least)
The rawdog essay is even better. Beyond rawdogging for its own sake, or beyond a wellness flex, I think it should be properly be seen as the first step towards truth and awakening. Indifference towards either goal will ensure that we run back to the screens like Homer to Moe's Tavern.
