Also thank you for distilling this goblin adjacent mossy retro functional aesthetic I’ve been seeing everywhere (and wearing myself tbh) - I think Laura and Deanna Fanning are the patron saints of the look.

to be an on-the-go 30-something is to be perennially caught between a posture destroying rock and a hard backpack place. I have long thought that the biggest gap in the accessories market is cool, chic backpacks that are functional and don’t cost the earth (and no, RAINS is not it). I recently invested in one from Porter Yoshida as a kind of homage to a Prada nylon (now ludicrously expensive - you’re a fool if you’re paying that much, even if you have the money). The PY was also far more expensive than it should have been (I had some vouchers - how is ANYONE affording new stuff these days?), but it’s simple, stylish, and functional. (And Japanese - essentially a byword for the former 3 attributes). That said, it’s still slightly too small (14in MacBook has to go in sleeveless) and the insulated fabric makes my back extremely hot. So it’s still not perfect!! Anyways yes, that’s the best rec I’ve got (get it cheaper secondhand) but any accessories designers reading this, please accept this challenge.

first off the rains backpacks are SO bad and im not familiar with these PY bags but these are great!!! to me, there is just no elegance or ease in having to lug around a computer and books in a handbag while trying to have a cute outfit on: it's one or the other, function or fashion, as the man-in=suit-wearing-a-backpack exposes the disgusting tension of such a state. anyway you'd think we'd have a clear solution here but almost twenty years into my-job-is-laptop we dont!!!!!

One thing about kids I noticed in the recent years (and it's been echoed by teachers) is the disappearance of parenting. When I was young there were rules to be followed - like be kind, let the older person seat, listen to the teacher, be respectful of your surroundings. Now ofc not everyone followed those rules and some of them were total bullshit.

What I notice more and more is that parents are scared of parenting - I could be sitting at a restaurant and there is a kid on an iPhone listening to some YT video with full volume on - excuse me, but a restaurant is not a place for that. People want to eat in peace, talk to their friends, not listen to some YT video. Obviously I can't blame the child - it doesn't know better. But I absolutely blame parents - if you can't entertain your child at a restaurant, don't go there. Idk, read a book on parenting or something.

What I've also noticed is that teachers fear parents now - wtf. When I was younger I was scared shitless when my parents were having 1:1 with teachers - their opinions impacted my home-life (like doing more math instead of gaming on my PC). Nowadays it seems that teachers are below everyone on the ladder and nobody respects them - which is funny considering children spend hours a day with them, maybe even more than with their parents.

I understand that parents are tired and it's easier to give an iPad to a kid - but if that's the case, maybe don't have children? They will be better off not existing rather than dealing with absent parents.

you're exactly right and it's as much about discipline of the self and self-respect as it is "behavior" which also ladders into teachers not being able to assert authority because now any such friction can be construed as a abuse, which is and isn't true: all part of the larger tapestry of things. which THEN paired with everyone's life being exhausting, that then means the kids get just as neglected as we neglect ourselves. really not-great combination of things! i think that's also PRECISELy why many people are opting out of kids because they reocgnize and see this in their own lives and from their own parents that they know they wouldn't do justice to a child in this state of the world sad!!!! very sad stuff

I don't buy that people don't know what to use instead of a backpack, when there are literally hundreds of ideas out there -- I use this:
